About WITS Accommodation 2023-2024
Campus Housing and Residence Life (CHRL) is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the University's residence programmes, including accommodation and meals, and the provision of recreational facilities and programmes for the improved academic performance and the holistic development of students within a residential environment.
NB: Applications are done online and not directly at the residences.
Braamfontein Cluster
The Braamfontein Residence Cluster compromises three self-catering student residences located in Braamfontein East, outside the University East Campus, Johannesburg.
The main campus, services and commercial areas, banks, and public transportation are all within two minutes' walk of this high-rise building, which is situated just off campus in Braamfontein at the intersection of Bertha and Jorissen Streets. In order to serve the growing demand for student housing, the building was donated to the university in the late 1980s.
- Housing: 258 students
- Amenities two TV lounges, student computer lab, laundry facilities, games room and a study area.
- Wi-Fi available in common areas and accessible on each floor
- Sports facilities available on main campus
- Free Wits bus service operating from Wits main campus to all nearby campuses, and weekend busses to Rosebank shopping mall.
1 Stiemens Street, Braamfontein 2001
Self-catering, mixed gender, residence with bachelor, 2, 3 and 4 bedroom apartments
Noswal Hall is a modern high-rise vibrant residence located off campus on the corner of Stiemens Street and Bertha Street in Braamfontein opposite the Wits School of Arts. The University took occupation of the building in February 2014.
- Housing: 399 students
- Modern high-rise building with spectacular views of Parktown and Johannesburg city
- Each apartment has fully furnished kitchen, a shower and toilet.
- Amenities;-Games room, two TV lounges (with DSTV), laundry facilities, vending machine for snacks, study rooms, and a student computer lab.
- Wi-Fi available throughout the residence
- Sports facilities available on Wits main campus and nearby Wits School of Education Campus in Parktown
- Free Wits bus service operating from Wits main campus to all nearby campuses, and weekend busses to Rosebank shopping mall
East Campus Cluster
The East Campus Cluster is located on the University’s original campus and includes the following residences:
Self-catering mixed-gender postgraduate residence
International House is set in a beautifully manicured garden.
Housing 70 postgraduate; honours, masters, and PhD students
Amenities include:
- 24/7 Security;
- Two TV lounges (one with DSTV);
- laundry facilities;
- study room with computers;
- Tea room;
- WiFi;
- Sports facilities on campus
- Residence assistants are available after-hours to assist with emergencies;

Catering residence for female students up to 25 years of age (Undergraduate only)
Modern high-rise building surrounded by gardens and overlooking the University's original playing fields.
Housing 350 female students.
Amenities include:
- 24/7 Security
- Meals are served in an on-site Dining hall;
- Two TV lounges (one with DSTV);
- Two computer labs;
- laundry facilities;
- Large coffee lounge;
- Vending machine
- Discussion room and group study area;
- Communal bathrooms;
- WiFi;
- Sports facilities on campus;
- Wardens are available after-hours to assist with emergencies;
- Free Wits bus service to all nearby campuses and weekend buses to the Rosebank shopping mall
College House and Dalrymple House
Catering residence for male students up to 25 years of age (Undergraduate only)
“Men’s Res” (College House and Dalrymple House) is joined by a communal driveway and linking gardens.
Housing 416 male students.
Accommodation varies from single to sharing double and triple rooms.
Amenities include:
- 24/7 Security
- Meals are served in the main dining hall in the Students’ Union building
- Common room;
- Two TV lounges (one with DSTV);
- Games room;
- Vending machine;
- Laundry facilities;
- Communal bathrooms;
- Computer lab;
- Study room
- WiFi;
- Sports facilities on campus;
- Wardens are available after-hours to assist with emergencies;
- Free Wits bus service to all nearby campuses, and weekend buses to Rosebank shopping mall.
Catering residence for female students up to 25 years of age (Undergraduate only)
Sunnyside, the smallest of all catering residences, is an attractive Herbert Baker–style building with a private garden.
Housing 280 female students.
Accommodation varies from single to sharing double and triple rooms.
Amenities include:
- 24/7 Security;
- Meals are served in the main dining hall in the Student’ Union building;
- Two TV lounges (one with DSTV);
- Laundry facilities;
- Communal bathrooms
- Vending machine;
- Study halls and discussion room;
- Computer lab;
- WiFi throughout the old wing of the residence, network points in the new wing;
- Sports facilities on campus;
- Wardens are available after-hours to assist with emergencies;
- Wits bus service to all nearby campuses, and weekend buses to Rosebank shopping mall
