Description:

Provides support to the surgical team for the Northwest Surgical Services region throughout the intra-operative stage of surgical care. Performs surgical operations in coordination with the surgeon and the medical staff, including assessing, planning, directing, delivering, and evaluating advanced nursing care. To assist with elective, emergent, and urgent surgical cases, all RNFAs will take part in a regional on-call rotation.

Essential Functions:

Performance benchmarks for practice: Pre-operative. carries out preoperative evaluation and assessment. collaborates on the treatment plan with the surgical team. Intra-operative: According to AORN standards, licensure, state regulations, and facility/practice norms provides knowledge-based technical help to the surgeon during the operational procedure, including Using equipment and medical devices. exposing the surgical procedure. cutting and/or handling tissue When ordered by the surgeon, clamp, cut, and ligate tissue while maintaining hemostasis. suturing as the surgeon instructs. Post-Operative. evaluates the patient after surgery in accordance with the hospital's protocols.
– Evaluation Criteria for Performance and Planning: communicates information to ensure the continuity of care. demonstrates professional and polite communication with patients, families, and other staff members.through education, training, and experience, acquires the skills and information necessary to deliver appropriate population-based and culturally sensitive care to patients and families. offers ongoing evaluation during the intraoperative time. uses an understanding of the procedure type to design for the proper setup.
– Performance benchmarks for best practices: In all surgical specialties, work as an assistant as directed by the attending surgeon. follows Kaiser Permanente's institutional policies and procedures, the AORN Position Statement on RN First Assistants, and the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Oregon when carrying out RNFA duties. Practice within your preparation and experience boundaries. demonstrate your clinical expertise in the RNFA. Continually review and update the skills checklist in accordance with Kaiser Permanente policies.

Handling tissue, providing exposure, utilizing instruments, clamping, cutting, and legate, as instructed by the surgeon, ensuring homeostasis, and suturing as instructed by the surgeon, are all examples of intraoperative nursing practices. collaborates with the scrub person and circulating nurse to help with room preparation. bring the patient's X-rays into the room

NOTE:

Informs Charge Nurse or designated representative if movies are unavailable. helps with patient transfer to the operation room table and transportation of patients there. helps the anesthesia department out during induction. takes part in the pre-operation briefing time-out procedure. helps with patient positioning. assists with patient preparation, including shaving, catheterization, and other essential procedures. helps with patient drapery. sets up the sterile field's suction, lights, and ESU.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience

– Minimum two (2) years of peri-operative scrubbing and circulating experience in a KP OR or one (1) year of experience as an RNFA in or outside of KP.

Education

– Certification of Completion from AORN-recognized RNFA course.

– Successful completion of an RNFA program that meets the AORN Recommended Education Standards for RNFA and criteria for the CB.PMN acceptance program.

License, Certification, Registration

– Current Oregon RN license required upon hire/transfer.

– Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers required upon hire/transfer.- Current CNOR Certification.

 

 Additional Requirements:

– Meets all qualifications of an RNFA as outlined in AORN Position Statement.- Must maintain CNOR and RN licensure with the required amount of Continuing Education.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

– Minimum two (2) years of practice as an RNFA.

– CRNFA certification preferred.

– Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required upon hire/transfer preferred.
