University of Stellenbosch Application Requirement 2023-2024

Basic admission requirements for university study:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Independent Examinations Board (IEB) school-leaving certificate as certified by Umalusi with admission to bachelor's degree studies.
  • A university exemption certificate issued by the South African Matriculation Board to students with other school qualifications.
  • The minimum academic requirement for a bachelor's degree is:
  • 30% for a South African Language of Learning and Teaching (English or Afrikaans) and
  • An achievement rating of 4 (50% – 59%) in four 20-credit subjects
  • Only School of Tomorrow applicants have to write the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) if applying for a programme in AgriSciences.

Faculty requirements for programmes leading to a qualification in Viticulture and/or Oenology:

  • An average of at least 60% in the NSC, IEB or relevant final school examination.

The average is calculated by taking your highest score in Language of Learning and Teaching subject (English or Afrikaans) + (5 x best results in 20-credit subjects excluding Life orientation and Mathematics 3). The total divided by 6 equals your NSC average.

  • Afrikaans or English (Home Language or First Additional Language) 4 (50%)
  • Mathematics 5 (60%)
  • Physical Sciences (Physics and Chemistry) 4 (50%)Take note:
  • All programmes are selection programmes and applications will be considered according to the rules and procedures as set out in the Selection guidelines and admission policy for undergraduate programmes for the Faculty of AgriSciences.

In addition to the above, admission to programmes leading to BScAgric*, BScFor*, BScConsEcol, BSc Food Sc and BAgricAdmin requires at minimum:

  • An average performance level of 60% in the NSC or the IEB's school-leaving certificate (excluding Life Orientation), or other school qualification;
  • Afrikaans or English (Home Language or First Additional Language) 4 (50%);
  • Mathematics 5 (60%);
  • Physical Sciences (Physics and Chemistry) 4 (50%)

*For BScAgric with Soil Science and Chemistry as major subjects:

  • An average performance level of 60% in the NSC or the IEB's school-leaving certificate (excluding Life Orientation), or other school qualification;
  • Afrikaans or English (Home Language or First Additional Language) 4 (50%)
  • Mathematics 6 (70%)
  • Physical Sciences (Physics and Chemistry) 4 (50%)

In addition to the general admission requirements of SU, admission to the programme leading to BAgric (Elsenburg) requires at minimum:

  • Afrikaans or English (Home Language or First Additional Language) 4 (50%);
  • Mathematics 4 (50%) or Mathematical Literacy 5 (60%);
  • Physical Sciences (Physics and Chemistry) 4 (50%); OR
  • Life Sciences 4 (50%); OR
  • Agricultural Sciences 4 (50%).

The prospective student is also required to take the National Benchmark Tests (NBT), including the Mathematics component (MAT) of the tests.

APPLICATION FEE​

A non-refundable application fee of R100 is required upon application.

This amount is not applicable to the following groups of students:

International students;
Students applying to the Stellenbosch Business School.

Tuition Fees are determined as per degree/module enrolled for and as set per Faculty.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT FEES
Please take note of the fee structure​ applicable to international students enrolling for the 2023 academic year.​

Academic fees for international students consist of four components:

Tuition fees as payable by South African students (see above);
International Registration Fee (IRF) payable annually by all non-South African students;
International Tuition Fee, an additional fixed amount charged annually at registration for the duration of an academic programme;
Service fees for academic-related services and consumable items (payable by all students, but International Students must pay for these in advance).

INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATION FEE (IRF)
The IRF is payable annually by all non-South African students including Asylum Seekers.
Permanent residency holders and Refugee status students do not pay IRF.
In general, if a permanent residence application is successful by the last date for registration (in March and as determined by the University Calendar, Part 1) for the current academic year, then the permanent resident will be allowed to register on this status. However, if the permanent residence status becomes effective after this date, it will only be taken into consideration at the next registration period of the following academic year.
If a refugee status application is successful by the last date for registration (in March and as determined by the University Calendar, Part 1) for the current academic year, then the refugee will be allowed to register on this status. However, if the refugee status becomes effective after this date, it will only be taken into consideration at the next registration period of the following academic year.

How to Apply online to University of Stellenbosch

In order to apply SUN Online Application, you will need the followings:

  • A working email address
  • your South African identity number
  • If you are an international applicant, your passport number

How to apply online

If you are unable to apply online, you may submit a paper application by printing the forms from the links above, and sending them to the Admissions Office at the address indicated on the right.

SUN Application Forms for 2024 admissions will become available in April 2024.

 Candidates should utilise a computer with a strong internet connection and a valid email address to apply online.

To successfully apply for SUN admission for the 2024 academic year, follow the steps given below:

  • Visit SUN online application portal via www.sun.ac.za and click on ‘Apply Now’ or alternatively go to www.student.sun.ac.za/signup/ to apply.
  • Once you click on the link above, they will direct you to fill in your biographical information.
  • The next step is to purchase the non-refundable application fee of R100 to the Stellenbosch  University portal. (applicable to manual applicants only.)
  • Follow every step given on the page to purchase the application form online. Thereafter, your reference number (student number) will be sent to the email address you provided.
  • Follow all the guidelines on the page and upload the documents needed to apply.
  • Clicking the SUBMIT AND PRINT button will submit the form.
  • Make sure you provide the correct information before submitting the form. Changes after form submission is not allowed.
In order to apply University of Stellenbosch (SUN) Application Form, you will need the followings:

  • Proof of payment of your registration fee(compulsory for SA and International applicants)
    Certified copy of your ID document(ID document compulsory for SA citizens – your application cannot be processed without a certified copy of your ID and Passport Number for International Applicants
  • Exam Results: Final Grade 12 results (if available). Grade 11 results (if currently doing grade 12) are very important for your application. Thus, have it on hand.
  • Remember you will need a unique email address when applying either online or in a hard copy.
