Individuals who are experiencing extreme financial hardship and are unable to provide basic necessities for themselves or their family can seek temporary support through a program called Social Relief of Distress. South African citizens or permanent residents who meet certain criteria and have limited means can apply for this assistance. These criteria include: anticipating receipt of authorized social aid, being medically unable to work for less than six months, applying within three months of the breadwinner's death, being unable to contact a parent, child, or spouse obligated by law to pay maintenance, having a primary provider in a state-funded facility, being impacted by the Disaster Management Act or Fund Raising Act of 1978, and not receiving assistance from any other entity or person. Seeking Social Relief of Distress can alleviate unnecessary suffering caused by financial difficulties.

Period of Social Relief of Distress (New Policy)

  • Social Relief of Distress is a form of temporary assistance that is provided on a monthly basis for a maximum of three months. In rare cases, an extension of an additional three months may be granted. It's important to note that individuals who are already receiving a social grant are not eligible to receive assistance through Social Relief of Distress. If someone who receives both grants and social assistance seeks aid, they will be required to pay back the value of the assistance received. This amount will be deducted from any future social aid payments, including arrears. However, if the recipient has also received relief for a disaster, the money will not need to be repaid.
