UKZN (University of KwaZulu-Natal) offers online admission for prospective students who wish to apply to study at the university. The admission requirements may vary depending on the level of study, faculty, and program you are applying for.

Here are some general requirements for undergraduate programs:

1. National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Senior Certificate (SC) with a bachelor's degree endorsement or an equivalent qualification.
2. An achievement level of at least 4 (50-59%) in English as a Home Language or First Additional Language.
3. An achievement level of at least 4 (50-59%) in Mathematics or Mathematics Literacy, depending on the program requirements.
4. Meeting the faculty-specific requirements for the program you are applying for.
5. Non-South African applicants must have their qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

For postgraduate programs, the admission requirements generally include:

1. A recognized Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification.
2. Meeting the faculty-specific requirements for the program you are applying for.

4. Some programs may require work experience or additional qualifications.

The Senior Certificate and NSC-Deg

For entrance to the program, each program has established a minimal composite Academic Performance Score. However, this is the minimum score needed to be taken into consideration, therefore students who only achieve this level cannot be guaranteed admission. Program applicants are ranked according to APS, and candidates are chosen in descending order until all openings in the particular program have been filled. Since there is fierce competition for spots, it is doubtful that applicants who do not meet the APS for a given program would be taken into consideration.

Certain programs may impose additional criteria (for example, a portfolio of work, audition or interview) in order to determine eligibility for the program.

For students who have obtained a school leaving certificate other than the NSC, USAf criteria and guidelines for equivalent performance levels will be used where available to estimate the academic rank.

There will be no ‘Dean’s Discretion’ for students entering directly from NSC and selection will be done according to the agreed criteria by the College Admissions processes. However, some measure of discretion, to be exercised by the College Dean of Teaching & Learning, is required in the case of qualifying applicants from other countries or examination systems, immigrant applicants, or applicants with disabilities.
