Description:
Scrub responsibilities are performed while working under the direct supervision of a doctor or registered nurse, within the bounds of legal competence, and in compliance with established standards of care, rules, and procedures.
Significant Duties:
The following abilities, competencies, and attitudes are displayed by the Certified Surgical Technician to indicate proficiency.
Leadership upholds the policies, procedures, and responsibilities of Kaiser Permanente as well as any relevant local, state, and federal laws.
has a professional, helpful approach. finds and promotes novel concepts.
uses efficient communication techniques, such as issue escalation and chain of command, to achieve desired results.
partnership with the registered nurse in the identification and resolution of issues.
Determines the optimal order for assigning tasks in order to perform patient care tasks, and warns the registered nurse if tasks cannot be completed.
complies with legal requirements, regulations, guidelines, and best practices. Correct patient and procedure identification occurs during the nursing process.
Performs patient care tasks within the parameters of competence, taking into account the patient's age-related demands.
Inform the registered nurse of any odd findings.
gathers data and promptly gives it to the registered nurse so that it can be used to help the nurse revise the care plan.
With the registered nurse, discharge barriers are discussed, and interventions are implemented as needed.
Clinical Results uses common sense safety measures and maintains a secure environment for oneself and others.
observes the health of the patient and their family and alerts the registered nurse to any unexpected changes or strange observations.
displays competencies while on probation and after departmental competency validation is complete.
uses optimal body mechanics to move patients, instruments, supplies, and samples about the medical facility.
participates in efforts for departmental performance improvement, such as planning, monitoring, evaluating, and enhancing.
Assembles everything for the procedure and makes sure it is ready, available, calibrated, adjusted, in working condition, sterilized in accordance with protocol, and organized.
organizes and sets up the room.
performs the scrub duty as required, including anticipating the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments, cutting sutures, holding retractors, and obtaining/processing tissue samples.
Within the limits of their expertise, helps the doctor.
within the range of their expertise, assists with patient transfer, transport, and stabilization.
Reassembles packs, gets everything ready for sterilization, and/or sends everything back to central processing after cleaning instruments, containers, and equipment in accordance with set standards.
use sterilization machinery.
uses machinery safely and immediately reports any malfunctioning machinery.
lubricates, cleans, and carries out preventive maintenance.
makes effective and efficient use of computers.
Customer Service Adheres to the criteria for customer service set forth by the Service Area, the Medical Center, and the particular department.

Basic Qualifications:
Experience
-
One (1) year within the last three (3) years operating room scrubbing or equivalent military experience, including a variety of surgical procedures.

Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived.
Education
-
Graduate of an approved surgical technologist or military equivalent program.
-
High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
License, Certification, Registration
-
Surgical Technologist Certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assistants (NBSTSA) and/or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

BLS.
Additional Requirements:
-
Position requires considerable walking, standing, moderate lifting, exposure to patient elements, and handling of emergencies and patient incidents within their scope of competency.

Experience requirements may be waived or modified when an appropriate program or course is available and successfully completed.

Maintains required certifications as applicable.
-
Communicates in a clear, concise manner appropriate to the development stage of the patient.
-
Has full command of the English language (written and verbal).
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Some positions may be posted as bilingual Spanish required on a position-by-position basis.
-
May be expected to float to other areas within their scope of competency.

Willing to be trained on computer systems.
