Delivers services to anesthesia practitioners; gets ready and gives them the right tools and resources for the induction, upkeep, and emergence of anesthesia.
Assembles and prepares necessary airway and intubating equipment, (sterile) intravenous solutions, and other invasive lines (such as arterial, central venous pressure, and Swan-Ganz lines), as necessary, when deemed competent; connects appropriate gas hoses, mass spectrometry, and suction components; performs sterile skin prep, and is knowledgeable about sterile technique.
Prepares equipment and supplies, assembles and prepares transducers, and assembles and prepares cardiac output equipment. Prepares procedure trays for arterial line, CVP, Swan-Ganz, and regular intravenous lines.
Positions the patient for anesthesia administration, provides the necessary materials and monitoring equipment to start and install invasive lines, aids in induction and intubation by applying tracheal pressure, and equips the patient with monitoring equipment.
Carries out glucose monitoring.
Performs evaluations, troubleshooting, and emergency repairs on anesthesia equipment during surgery; maintains and services mechanical and electronic anesthesia equipment in accordance with departmental standards, including unit testing, calibration, cleaning, refurbishing, disassembly, and reassembly to ensure immediate availability.
Checks, calibrates, zero balances, and ensures proper operation of the necessary equipment (such as oxygen analyzers, pulse oximeters, and mass spectrometers), as well as transcutaneous monitors for temperature, blood pressure, and blood and fluid warmers.
Organizes the departmental workroom's equipment and supplies.
Following procedures, each anesthetizing location replenishes the supplies in the anesthetic machine or chart; the work/supply room is restocked and inspected; and supplies and medications are replenished as necessary.
Helps with the tracking and upkeep of capital equipment; helps with input and follow-up on capital equipment purchases, repairs, and replacements.
Together with the administrative personnel of the department, labels all of the department's equipment, assists in keeping track of patient charges, files anesthesia records, and stocks supplies.
Assists supervisors with quality improvement data collection. Tracks missing equipment.
- Minimum six (6) months of experience in the operating room, anesthesia or acute healthcare setting.
- High school diploma.
- Current BLS for Healthcare Providers CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification.
- Ability to follow instructions and troubleshoot equipment problems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skills in oral communication, written communication, interpersonal relations, and customer service.
- Associate's degree in health science, or related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge of anesthesia equipment, methods of sterilization and universal precautions, basic anatomy, physiology, and universal precautions, computers, supply ordering, and inventory.
