Individuals who are struggling to meet the basic needs of themselves or their families and require urgent material assistance may be eligible for the Social Relief of Distress program, a temporary aid program. South African citizens or legally recognized residents who meet one or more of the following criteria and do not have sufficient means to support themselves may apply for Social Relief of Distress:
- The applicant anticipates receiving an authorized social assistance payment.
- For under a half year, the candidate has been considered medicinally incapable to embrace profitable work.
- Within three months of the death of the breadwinner, the application must be submitted.
- There is evidence that attempts to contact a parent, child, or spouse who is required by law to pay maintenance have been unsuccessful.
- The primary caregiver for the family has been admitted to a facility that receives state funding (such as a prison, psychiatric hospital, state home for the elderly, substance abuse treatment center, or child and youth care center).
- The application has been affected by the Disaster Management Act or the Fund Raising Act, both of which were enacted in 1978 and define a disaster.
- There is no outside source of assistance for the individual.
You will avoid unnecessary misery if you apply for social support.
The Social Relief of Distress Period (New Policy)
- Social Relief of Distress is provided on a monthly basis for a maximum of three months, with a possible extension of another three months in exceptional cases. It's important to note that individuals who are already receiving a social grant are not eligible to receive social relief of distress. In such cases, the full value of the assistance received must be repaid, and all future social assistance payments, including any arrears, will be deducted from this amount. However, if the recipient of the social grant also receives disaster relief assistance, they will not be required to repay the funds.
