The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) was established in April 2005 as a national government agency to administer social benefits on behalf of the Department of Social Development. The Department of Social Development provides national government oversight of social security through reports it receives. The socioeconomic rights of South African citizens, as recognized by Sections 24-29 of the Bill of Rights in the South African Constitution, are gradually implemented by the government through the use of available resources and appropriate legal and other means. It is important to note that the SASSA Act of 2004 governs SASSA.
Grants from Sassa are due in May 2023 and 2024.
- Social assistance can be obtained in a variety of ways:
- a pension for the elderly, a grant for child support, a grant for taking care of a child with a severe disability, a grant for veterans of war, a grant for people with disabilities, and assistance for children in foster care;
- Social alleviation of distress, a short-term fix in the form of packages or vouchers for those who are in desperate need, or grant-in-aid for those who require a full-time caregiver The coronavirus relief effort has received R320 million from Steyn.
