According to the ophthalmologist's instructions, conducts initial examinations and specific tests of the eyes. aids ophthalmologists as necessary during clinical examinations and surgical operations.

 

Essential Purposes

• Conducts interviews with each patient to learn about their symptoms and record the information in the patient's medical file.

• Adheres to the established protocol to choose the right tests to do depending on the patient's description of their symptoms and a personal examination of their eyes.

• Examines the patient's condition and vision using specialized equipment.

• Provides test findings to the healthcare provider and draws attention to unusual circumstances.

• Supports general and specialized ophthalmologists during surgical operations and clinical eye examinations as needed.

• Use protective shields and eye dressings as indicated.

• Records examination findings and medical interventions in the patient file.

• Maintains and cleans specialized workspaces and equipment.

• Attends patients in need of immediate attention and informs the ophthalmologist of their status.

• Handles other related tasks as needed.

Basic Qualifications:
Experience
• Two (2) years of experience working in an Ophthalmology practice as an Ophthalmic Assistant required.
Education
• High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
• Formal courses in ophthalmology or military training.
License, Certification, Registration
• Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is required.
• BLS certification required.
Additional Requirements:
• Proficiency in the use of applicable computer software required.
• Successfully demonstrated proficiency on initial skills assessment during the interview process required.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to perform IV Fluorescein Angiography preferred.
• Formal shadowing program or actual experience in a program for IV insertions for non-nurses preferred.
