Performs a range of tasks and services involving cardiac arrhythmia surveillance of telemetry and critical care unit (CCU) patients under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or provider; observes data produced from central cardiac monitors; and maintains responsibility and accountability for delegated tasks.
Significant Duties:
Patients' rhythm strips are recorded and mounted on cardiac arrhythmia monitors; as necessary, heart rate, PR interval, QRS complexes, and QT intervals are measured in accordance with unit standards. tracks heart rates, continuously scans central cardiac monitors for arrhythmias and variations in blood pressure and/or respiration, and alerts a nurse or healthcare professional to any changes in the patient.
During the insertion of hemodynamic and pacing catheters, keep an eye on the monitors for arrhythmia; notify a nurse or healthcare professional of any changes in the patient.
When necessary, assists employees in an emergency; notify the proper personnel of a situation; adheres to the approved emergency protocol; and maintains composure throughout these actions.
Observes how various drugs affect arrhythmia and report effects to a nurse or a health care provider. Observes and records all relevant information and data during unit 500; reports pertinent information to incoming staff before leaving monitor station.
Responds to call lights and alert the nurse to any patient needs; help guests with inquiries and requests unrelated to the patient's condition or treatment.
updates the patient census board in the telemetry unit with information on admissions and discharges.
Labels and sends trend reports for the previous eight hours for each patient as necessary.
Utilizes nursing department and unit-specific standards, policies, procedures, protocol, and guidelines; applies hospital-defined safety concepts and standards to patient, environment, and employee issues.
Aside from signing off on all arrhythmia sheets and helping the nursing staff start their shift reports, the arrhythmia sheet signer also enters patient data and events into the medical record and completes additional forms and documentation in accordance with unit standards and procedures.
maintains sign-out lists for various pieces of equipment, cleans monitor boxes and accompanying wiring, and orders any supplies that are required.
helping to orient newly hired cardiac monitoring technicians.
Maintains appropriate certification; goes to meetings as directed; and, when asked, takes part in nursing research initiatives and peer reviews.

- Minimum six (6) months of cardiac monitor technician experience or successful completion of the training program.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Post-high school coursework in electrocardiogram (EKG).
- Current BLS for Healthcare Providers CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in adaptability, change management, customer service, oral communication, problem-solving, results orientation, teamwork, and written communication.
- Demonstrates sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities in the area of specialization.
- Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide care and/or service appropriate to age groups served.
- Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide culturally sensitive care and/or service.
- Minimum one (1) year of EKG monitor reading experience in an acute care setting.
