The South African Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant was a temporary financial assistance program provided by the government to support vulnerable individuals and families who were struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The SRD grant provided a monthly payment of R350 for a period of up to six months, depending on the applicant's circumstances.

To be eligible for the SRD grant, applicants had to be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees registered with the Department of Home Affairs, and over the age of 18. They also had to show that they had no source of income or that their income was below R3500 per month. Additionally, applicants had to demonstrate that they were in distress due to a disaster or unforeseeable emergency, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

To apply for the SRD grant, applicants had several options, including:

  • Online: Applicants could visit the SASSA website and follow the instructions to apply online. They would need to provide their personal information, income details, and supporting documents.
  • WhatsApp: Applicants could send a message to 082 046 8553 and follow the prompts to apply for the SRD grant. They would need to provide their personal information, income details, and supporting documents.
  • Email: Applicants could send an email to srd@sassa.gov.za and attach their completed application form and supporting documents.
  • SASSA offices: Applicants could visit their nearest SASSA office and complete a paper application form. They would need to bring their ID document and supporting documents.

Once an application was submitted, SASSA would review the information and notify the applicant of the outcome. If the application was approved, the applicant would receive the first payment within a few weeks. The grant was paid through the South African Post Office, and applicants were required to have a bank account to receive the payment.

It is important to note that the SRD grant was a temporary relief measure and was not intended to provide long-term support. Applicants might be required to reapply for the grant after six months if they still met the eligibility criteria. The SRD grant was terminated in April 2022, but the South African government has implemented various measures to address poverty and unemployment in the long term, including job creation initiatives and skills development programs.
