The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is a temporary grant offered by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to provide immediate and short-term relief to individuals who have been severely affected by disasters, crises, or the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The SRD grant was initially introduced as a six-month measure in May 2020 and has since been extended several times, with the latest extension running from May to October 2022.

  • The SRD grant provides eligible individuals with R350 per month for the duration of the grant, subject to reapplication and verification of eligibility each month. To qualify for the SRD grant, applicants must be unemployed, not receiving any other social grant or UIF benefits, and be over the age of 18. They must also be South African citizens or permanent residents with valid identification documents and must have no other means of support.
  • To apply for the SRD grant, individuals can visit the SASSA website or use the SASSA WhatsApp line to complete an online application. The online application requires individuals to provide their personal and contact details, as well as information about their income, employment status, and household composition. Applicants must also provide supporting documents, such as proof of income or unemployment, identity documents, and bank statements.
  • The SRD grant application process has been streamlined since its initial rollout, and applicants can expect to receive a response within a few days of submitting their application. If an application is successful, the applicant will receive a confirmation SMS with a payment date and details on how to collect the grant. Payments are made through electronic funds transfer (EFT) to the bank account provided by the applicant during the application process.
  • SASSA has also partnered with selected retailers and financial institutions to provide alternative payment methods, such as vouchers or cash payments, for individuals who do not have a bank account or access to formal financial services. These alternative payment methods are available in selected areas and are subject to availability.
  • It is important to note that the SRD grant is a temporary measure and is subject to change or termination at any time. Recipients of the grant must reapply each month and meet the eligibility criteria to continue receiving the grant. The SRD grant is intended to provide immediate relief to individuals who have been severely affected by the ongoing crisis and should not be seen as a long-term solution to poverty or unemployment. SASSA encourages individuals to seek other forms of support and opportunities for income generation while they receive the SRD grant.
