Undergraduate qualifications

Applications for admission to undergraduate qualifications for the 2025 academic year are to be open from 19 August to 11 October 2024.  Apply Online here.

Honours degrees & postgraduate diplomas

Applications for admission to honors degrees and postgraduate diplomas for the 2025 academic year are to be open from 19 August to 11 October 2024. Applicants can apply here. Apply Online here

Master's & doctoral qualifications

Applications for admission to master's and doctoral degrees for the 2025 academic year are to be open from 2 September to 22 November 2024 (some exceptions apply). Apply Online here.

UNISA Online Application Requirements

The University of South Africa (UNISA) has specific application requirements that applicants need to meet to be considered for admission. The requirements may vary depending on the type of qualification you are applying for. Here are the general requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications:

Undergraduate qualifications:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) or equivalent qualification with admission to bachelor's degree studies
  • A minimum score of 50% for each of the four designated subjects that are required for your chosen qualification (some qualifications may have additional subject requirements)
  • Mature Age Exemption for applicants over 23 years old who do not meet the minimum admission requirements

Postgraduate qualifications:

  • A relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4-point scale
  • Some qualifications may have additional requirements such as work experience or professional qualifications

In addition to the above requirements, applicants will also need to provide the following documents as part of their application:

  • Certified copies of their academic transcripts and qualifications
  • A certified copy of their ID or passport
  • Proof of payment of the application fee

All applicants starting a new qualification must upload all the required documents, which generally consist of the following:

  • Copy of your school qualifications (eg Senior Certificate, National Senior Certificate)
  • Copy of your official tertiary academic record(s) (if applicable) (internet copies will not be accepted)
  • Copy of your ID document (RSA students) or ID/passport (international students)
  • Copy of your marriage certificate (if applicable) or divorce decree (if applicable)
  • Sworn translations of documents if they are not in English or Afrikaans

We urge all Unisa students who previously applied to upload all the required documents. Failure to do so may result in a delay in processing your application. Some qualifications may require additional documents. Unisa reserves the right to request original documents and/or to verify the correctness of submitted documents at any time. Submitting fraudulent documents is an offense in terms of the Student Disciplinary Code.

Everyone applying for a new qualification must submit the required documents (all first-time applicants and Unisa students starting a new qualification). The due date for uploading the required documents is the closing date for applications. No documents submitted after the closing date for applications will be accepted. Unisa does not provide scanners or electronic devices. Please ensure your documents are scanned and uploaded to an electronic device before starting the application process.

UNISA Application FEES

The University of South Africa (UNISA) requires applicants to pay an application fee when applying for admission. The application fee is a non-refundable fee that covers the administrative costs of processing the application.

  • R125 for online applications
  • Use the student number you receive from Unisa AND the application fee reference number (ie YOUR STUDENT NUMBER 5370810030)
  • Send the proof of payment to susdepid@unisa.ac.za
  • Visit www.unisa.ac.za/paymentinfo for banking details and payment information

This fee is non-refundable even if you decide not to study through Unisa, do not qualify for admission to Unisa, or cannot be offered a space due to limited spaces available. Unisa does not accept cash at any of its offices.

The due date for the application fee is the closing date for the application period. Any application submitted without an application fee paid on time will not be processed. Please ensure that you keep a copy of your proof of payment.

The application fee for undergraduate qualifications is R110 for South African applicants and R170 for international applicants. The application fee for postgraduate qualifications is R220 for South African applicants and R470 for international applicants. It is important to note that the application fee is subject to change, so it is recommended that prospective students check the UNISA website for the most up-to-date information on application fees.

UNISA also offers an online payment system that applicants can use to pay their application fees. Applicants can pay the fee using a credit card or via electronic funds transfer (EFT). It is important to keep proof of payment, as it may be required during the application process. UNISA may also offer financial assistance to students who cannot pay the application fee.
