The University of the Witwatersrand, commonly referred to as Wits, is a public research university located in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was founded in 1896 as the South African School of Mines, and later became the University College of the Witwatersrand in 1922. The university was granted full university status in 1959.

WITS Application Dates

The application dates for the University of the Witwatersrand vary depending on the program you are applying for. Below are the general application dates for different categories of students:

  1. Undergraduate Applicants:
  • South African citizens and Permanent Residents: Applications usually open in March and close on 30th September of the same year.
  • International Applicants: Applications usually open in March and close on 31st August of the same year.
  1. Postgraduate Applicants:
  • South African citizens and Permanent Residents: Applications are accepted throughout the year but deadlines may vary depending on the program.
  • International Applicants: Applications are accepted throughout the year but deadlines may vary depending on the program.
  1. Health Sciences Faculty Applicants:
  • South African citizens and Permanent Residents: Applications usually open in March and close on 30th June of the same year.
  • International Applicants: Applications usually open in March and close on 31st May of the same year.

WITS Application Requirement

  • International Applicants: You must have a relevant undergraduate degree with an average of at least 65% or equivalent, and meet the specific admission requirements for the program you are applying for. You will also need to provide proof of proficiency in English.
  1. Health Sciences Faculty Applicants:

  • EFT – Use your Person/Student number as the reference.

Supporting documents

  • Upload your supporting documents at the time of application. You also have the option to upload your documents after you have submitted your application via the student self-service portal https://self-service.wits.ac.za
  • Current Matriculants: Upload your final Grade 11 results (no hardcopy required).
  • Already Matriculated: Upload certified copies of all your matric certificates/foreign school leaving certificates.
  • Other Tertiary Institutions: Upload a certified copy of official academic records for ALL tertiary registrations, inclusive of a statement/certificate of good conduct, stamped by the institution’s registrar. (Note that interim, self-service generated results will be considered for initial assessment purposes for GEMP applicants ONLY).

 

 

How to Apply Online

Prospective students can access the self service through this link to apply for the University of Witwatersrand.

Step one – Apply Online

To apply, go to www.wits.ac.za/applications/

  1. You may apply for a maximum of three programmes (order of choice does not matter).
  2. Do you meet the admission requirements for your degree of choice?
  3. Apply before the closing date.
  4. Apply using your names as they appear on your ID book/card or passport (do not use initials or nicknames).
  5. If you apply for two programmes within one Faculty, you are advised to apply for one programme in a less restricted faculty (e.g. Humanities, Commerce or Science).
  6. Try to keep your study options open, especially when applying for programmes in faculties such as Health Sciences or Engineering.
  7. Do not enter the duration of the programme. You are applying to go into 1st year of study.
  8. In accordance with the POPI Act, applicants are required to complete their own applications and accept the University's legal declaration of indemnity and undertaking. The University will not engage with third-party agents facilitating applications on behalf of applicants.

Residence applications will open 1 April 2023. Go to the self-service portal to apply.\

Step ThreeAcknowledgement of Application
  1. We will email you to confirm we have received your application.
  2. Our acknowledgment letter will contain a person number (which will become your student number), and a reference person for you to contact for any queries you may have.
  3. All records of correspondence from the University will be available on the student self-service portal https://self-service.wits.ac.za
  4. Check the status of your application and your to do items on the student self-service portal regularly.
  5. Keep your contact details up-to-date on self-service.
