Description:

Help doctors and nurses with examinations, treatments, and special procedures while being closely supervised. Apply splints to patients as directed by the head of the orthopedic department, carry out clinic-related patient care tasks, and maintain an emergency room holding ward in accordance with accepted policies, routines, practices, and procedures.

 

Significant Duties:

  • Helps with therapeutic and diagnostic patient care tasks that can call for sterile procedure, like applying and removing bandages and splints, cleaning and/or irrigating wounds, and preparation. explains standard self-care techniques as instructed and introduces them to the policies and procedures of the Medical Center.
  • By situating and draping the patient, the emergency room worker assists with different diagnostic tests and minor surgical operations.
  • Helps with specialized procedures including thoracotomies, lumbar punctures, peritoneal lavages, thoracentesis, etc. prior to surgical and/or examination procedures, makes the essential preparations or organizes the treatment areas as necessary for the specific process.
  • Receives incoming calls and responds appropriately.
  • Massages the closed heart (CPR).
  • Gives individuals a 12-lead EKG as instructed. EKGs can be uploaded to the Muse system.
  • Obtains a patient's full set of vital signs and an inventory of their apparel.
  • Provides patients with canes and crutches as needed, makes necessary adjustments, and teaches them how to walk correctly as directed by the head of the orthopedic department.
  • Apply simple splints for fractures and sprains according to a doctor's orders, using the proper materials.
  • Synchronizes the departmental cleaning and processing of instruments with Central Processing.
  • Forms, mail, samples, and other items need to be picked up and delivered between departments.
  • Direct and transport patients to the proper ED or medical center rooms or locations.
  • Maintains a sufficient supply of supplies and notifies the charge nurse or clinical supervisor of any shortages.
  • Prepare gurney/beds, stock patient things at bedheads, stock oxygen tank supplies, set up suction at each gurney location, gloves, and EKG electrodes when applicable, among other tasks as given.
  • Maintain a spotless work environment, including ED ramps, supply rooms, and utility rooms.
  • Promotes, guarantees, and enhances customer service to internal and external clients by displaying abilities that are consistent with the company's guiding principle of delivering exceptional customer relations and high-quality service.

Basic Qualifications:
Experience
  • Six (6) months (1,000 hours) recent experience (within two 2 years) in a health care/patient contact setting required.
  • Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived.
Education
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required.
  • Proof of successful completion of an anatomy course (from an accredited college, vocational, adult education) within the last (3) years; or six (6) months (1,000 hours) recent (within two 2 years) Emergency Room Technician/EMT experience; or two (2) years recent experience in Kaiser Permanente Emergency Department required.
License, Certification, Registration
  • Current License of Emergency Medical Technician in State of California or Nationally Registered EMT (NREMT).
  • Current BCLS required.
Additional Requirements:
  • Successful completion of Kaiser Permanente Orthopedics demonstration/validation of ability to apply all types of splints within the probationary period. Employee will have a maximum of three opportunities to demonstrate/validate the ability to apply all types of splints and other orthopedic devices.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum two (2) years Emergency Department or Emergency Medical Services.

Notes:

  • Scheduled work hours per week will be 20-32.
  • 8 hour shifts, Varied days, Varied Hours, Varied Shifts and may be required to work every weekend
