As of April 2023, the South African government is not offering the SASSA SRD (Social Relief of Distress) grant of R350 per month. However, I can provide information on the previous application process for the SRD grant, which was available from August 2020 to April 2022.
It is important to note that the previous application process may differ from any potential future application processes that the government may implement.
To apply for the SRD grant, applicants had to be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees registered with the Department of Home Affairs, and over the age of 18. Applicants had to demonstrate that they had no source of income, or that their income was below R3500 per month. They also had to show that they were in distress due to a disaster or unforeseeable emergency, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
The application process varied depending on the applicant's preferred method of application, which included online, WhatsApp, email, and physical application at SASSA offices. However, the basic requirements for eligibility and application were the same.
To apply for the SRD grant online, applicants had to follow these steps:
- Visit the SASSA website and select the “SRD grant application” option.
- Enter their personal details, including their ID number, name, surname, and contact information.
- Provide information about their income and employment status, including whether they had lost their job or income due to COVID-19.
- Submit supporting documentation, including a copy of their ID document or passport, a letter from their employer confirming loss of income, and a bank statement or proof of bank account.
- Review and submit their application.
After submitting the application, SASSA would verify the applicant's information and eligibility. Successful applicants would receive the SRD grant amount of R350 per month for a period of up to six months. Applicants were required to reapply for the grant after six months if they still met the eligibility criteria.
It is important to note that the SRD grant was a temporary relief measure and not a permanent solution to financial distress. The South African government has implemented various measures to address the issue of poverty and unemployment in the long term, including job creation initiatives and skills development programs.
