The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) does offer a Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, which is designed to provide temporary financial assistance to individuals and families who are experiencing distress due to an emergency or disaster.

The SRD grant provides a monthly payment of R350 for a period of up to six months, depending on the applicant's circumstances. The grant is available to South African citizens, permanent residents, and refugees registered with the Department of Home Affairs who meet the following criteria:

  • Have no income or have a total monthly income of less than R3500.
  • Are not receiving any other form of social grant.
  • Are not receiving Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) benefits.
  • Are in distress due to an emergency or disaster.

To apply for the SRD grant, applicants can use any of the following methods:

  • Online: Applicants can visit the SASSA website and follow the instructions to apply online. They will need to provide their personal information, income details, and supporting documents.
  • WhatsApp: Applicants can send a message to 082 046 8553 and follow the prompts to apply for the SRD grant. They will need to provide their personal information, income details, and supporting documents.
  • Email: Applicants can send an email to srd@sassa.gov.za and attach their completed application form and supporting documents.
  • SASSA offices: Applicants can visit their nearest SASSA office and complete a paper application form. They will need to bring their ID document and supporting documents.

Once an application is submitted, SASSA will review the information and notify the applicant of the outcome. If the application is approved, the applicant will receive the first payment within a few weeks. The grant is paid through the South African Post Office, and applicants are required to have a bank account to receive the payment.

It is important to note that the SRD grant is a temporary relief measure and is not intended to provide long-term support. Applicants may be required to reapply for the grant after six months if they still meet the eligibility criteria.
