sassa top up grant 2023-2024
The high cost of living in South Africa has been impacted by the recent increases in electricity and gasoline prices, which are essential input expenses for businesses. As a result, SASSA grant beneficiaries are feeling the impact of rising food and transportation costs.
According to the Household Affordability Index, the cost of the food basket has risen by R472.78 (11.4%) from R4,137.11 in May to R4,609.89 in May, highlighting the increasing cost of living in the country. However, orphan caregivers will be able to cope better with these rising expenses, as the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has increased their payment amount.
To assist families caring for orphans in meeting their basic needs, SASSA has established the Child Support Grant (CSG) Top-Up. Its primary objective is to keep children in the care of extended family members. These children will receive a total of R720, consisting of the R480 base CSG plus an additional R240.
Caregivers who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for the CSG Top-Up either online or at any SASSA local office. Here is a list of the requirements for applying for the child support grant top-up.
- To apply for a social grant in the event of a deceased child, a copy of the death certificate of the child is required. Additionally, if one of the child's parents has passed away, the applicant must provide a certified copy of the deceased parent's death certificate. If the applicant is unable to obtain the death certificate of one of the parents, an affidavit must be provided, attesting to the unknown status of the other parent.
