Description:
The Senior Physician Assistant delivers excellent, effective, team-based patient-focused care under the supervision of a supervising physician. In addition to treating patients in the office, hospital, ED, and/or perioperative setting, the Senior Physician Assistant may also have other duties. It can be necessary for the senior physician assistant to first assist in the operating room or carry out other department-specific operations. The Senior Physician Assistant may also help his or her supervising physician with on-call duties. Depending on departmental and supervising physician needs, the Senior Physician Assistant's daily duties may change and necessitate late or weekend hours. By virtue of his or her experience and competence, the Senior Physician Assistant offers a high level of clinical and operational skills and may serve as a mentor to Physician Assistants with less experience.
administers or orders diagnostic tests, including electrocardiograms, blood tests, and imaging investigations, and evaluates test results to look for out-of-the-ordinary outcomes.
administers therapeutic operations, including injections, vaccinations, suturing, wound care, and infection management.
performs additional diagnostic or therapeutic procedures particular to the department.
creates and carries out patient management plans, keeps track of progress, and contributes to the continuity of care.
teaches and counsels patients on how to follow therapeutic regimens as recommended, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional issues with daily life, maintaining health, and other pertinent patient education.

Performs admission evaluation on patients, which entails gathering basic medical information and a medical history, reviewing the patient's medical record, performing a physical exam, entering findings into the patient's medical record, and notifying the attending physician of any findings that are out of the ordinary.
Pre-operative, pre-procedure, and other relevant education is given to the patient and family.
Performs peri-operative procedures, locates and uses diagnostic pictures, instruments, and relevant patient information, and responds to inquiries about surgery or procedures, recuperation, and risk factor adjustment.
Review patient records, making note of any allergies, relevant medical history, and unusual physical findings.
helps execute surgical procedures and other procedures in accordance with the accepted standards of care and best practices.
Performs post-operative operations, such as recording typical post-operative orders into patients' medical records; helps doctors assess and manage patients' conditions while they recover; reviews vital signs, laboratory results, and diagnostic tests; and helps with patient care.
facilitates patient discharge and promptly orders discharge and transfer summaries.

The Senior Physician Assistant has a high level of clinical and administrative knowledge and may serve as a mentor to Physician Assistants with less experience.

- Minimum three (3) years of previous experience in the last five (5) years as a physician assistant.
- Graduate from an ARC-PA accredited physician assistant program.
- California State Physician Assistant License, issued by the Physician Assistant Board under the Medical Board of California by date of hire.
- NCCPA certified at the time of hire and maintained throughout my career at Kaiser Permanente.
- BLS certification is required.
- Must have a Nat'l Provider Identifier (NPI), or obtain an NPI, prior to employment start date and meet current Medicare requirements for billing.
- Fluoroscopy Permit is required or must be obtained within 18 months from the date of hire in Orthopedics, Interventional Radiology, and Radiation Oncology only.
- May be required to have experience and competency in performing specific tasks required by the specific department.
- Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
- Advanced Certification in a specialty area, is preferred.
