Performs pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical procedures and analyses under the general supervision of the Laboratory Director or their designee to provide data for health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of medical conditions. assigns, oversees, and keeps an eye on the work of clinical laboratory scientists and other lab staff. By working together across departments and using quality control procedures, the quality of patient care and service is improved. aids in making sure laboratory policies and procedures are followed.

 

Essential Purposes

– Delegates, guides, and supervises the work of clinical lab scientists and other staff.

– Educates lab assistants on the necessary methods and procedures for carrying out clinical laboratory work.

– Provides instruction on proper techniques and procedures for clinical laboratory practices to clinical lab scientists and other laboratory staff.

– Accurately confirms that the right patients are being tested on the right specimen, and that the right test is being run.

– Evaluates the suitability and characteristics of the specimens offered for testing.

– Performs clinical laboratory specimen analyses in accordance with the established methods and practices that the Laboratory Director or a designee has approved.

– Executes quality control processes to make sure clinical data is accurate.

– Assist with efforts for Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement in line with the Laboratory Quality Plan.

– Uses test reference ranges, such as those for neonates, children, and adults, to assess the reasonableness of test results.

– Verifies test results by comparing them to test parameters (such as Hgb/Hct, anion gap, platelet count/smear, dipstick/micro, etc.).

Prior to disclosing test findings, confirm testing on all Critical Values to guarantee accuracy.

– Follows defined schedules and procedures to carry out routine preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on the instruments and equipment assigned to them.

– By examining and calibrating particular lab instruments, performs instrument function and records data.

– The instrument keeps track of any equipment maintenance, repairs, and replacements that are required.

– Releases or reports results in accordance with laboratory SOPs.

– Provides instruction on proper techniques and procedures for clinical laboratory practice to laboratory assistants and other clinical lab scientists.

– Directly manages employees working in the clinical laboratory.

– Executes supervision duties in accordance with the organization's rules and any relevant legal requirements.

Basic Qualifications:
• Three (3) years of Clinical Laboratory Scientist experience.
• Prior supervisory experience preferred.
• Computer application experience/proficiency preferred.
• Baccalaureate degree in Clinical Lab Sciences or related field; Applicable military experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree.
• Current California State Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Bio-analyst License.• Able to perform all duties of a Senior CLS.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise and competence to perform and check all work required of those supervised, in accordance with applicable CLIA regulations.
• Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to write technical policies and procedures.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other incumbents of the organization.
• Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
