Job Summary:
Utilizing manual equipment, performs clinical laboratory procedures under close supervision. keeps the necessary records and data. assists medical and laboratory technologists. encourages adherence to the rules and responsible behavior. maintains discretion. protects the resources of the company. demonstrates morality and integrity. obeys all relevant federal, state, and local laws, rules, policies, and requirements for accreditation and licensure. reports non-compliance problems and/or fixes them.

Significant Duties:

directly collects from the patient laboratory specimens such blood, urine, and sputum.

Separates plasma or serum from whole blood using a centrifuge. determines if a specimen is fit for testing. properly distributes, labels, and keeps samples. weights or measures the proper samples. gives professionals and technologists knowledge they can utilize in other laboratory tests.

operates and maintains machinery, such as centrifuges, that is used to get samples ready for testing. Maintain quality control maintenance charts on such equipment, as well as on the department's refrigerators and freezers. Using appropriate automatic equipment, prepares samples for analytical testing.

bacteriological specimens are inoculated onto culture media. smears are ready for staining.

enters data using the keyboard or computer's CRT. answers questions about handling and requirements for laboratory specimens. Keeps detailed records of all tests performed. Reports laboratory findings to authorized persons.

helps with moving things between lab, clinic, and hospital facilities. Maintains certification and training in packing and shipping as necessary to stay compliant with applicable laws.

utilizes a point-of-care testing equipment to carry out a glucose test.

Under close observation, completes the Bleeding Time Test.

Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains in accordance with accepted laboratory practices and formulas. sterilizes and cleans the tools and equipment used in laboratories. maintains the supply and chemical inventory in the lab.

keeps the workspace organized and clean.

applicable laws, rules, policies, and procedures from the federal and state governments, including those for accreditation and licensing. reports non-compliance problems and/or fixes them.

Basic Qualifications:
Experience
  • Minimum three (3) months of phlebotomy experience.
  • Minimum three (3) months experience in clinical laboratory setting.
Education
  • High School Diploma.
  • Phlebotomy training.
License, Certification, Registration
  • Heartsaver CPR AED within 6 months of hire from American Heart Association
Additional Requirements:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in adaptability, customer service, oral communication, teamwork, and written communication.
  • Talking to co-workers, customers, outside vendors, and on the telephone.
  • Reading, writing, speaking, understanding English.
  • Training/giving and receiving instructions.
  • Mathematical ability, attention to detail (e.g., organization, prioritization, proofing), concentration and alertness.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomist (CLPlb) by the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel, Inc.
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
  • Post-high school coursework in biology, chemistry or related science.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in word processing, spreadsheet, and database PC applications.
