Description:

Perform arrhythmia or ECG monitor observations while on duty under direct supervision, and notify the nursing staff of any changes.

 

Essential Purposes

– Gather, assemble, arrange, and keep records for the designated nursing unit.

– Watch the patients’ heartbeats on a monitor.

– At certain intervals, run while posting rhythm stripes.

– Launch code blues.

– Recognizing rhythms and confirming computer readout.

– Examine and confirm the placement of leads on patients.

– Compare the current strip to the prior one and let the nursing personnel know of any changes.

– Alert the nursing team to any modification in the heart rhythm.

– Stick a patient identity label on the television.

– Recognize strange or aberrant patient conditions and act accordingly.

– Instruments and equipment should be cleaned following each patient usage.

– The apparatus consists of an ECG monitor for the heart, a telemetry transmitter, a bank of central monitors, and an Arrhythmia analysis/printer.

– Check the equipment’s functionality.

– Verify that the machinery is in proper operating order.

– Inform the supervisor of any equipment issues.

– Keep the workspace neat and tidy.

– Occasionally take on additional duties and tasks as directed.

Basic Qualifications:

Previous monitor observer experience preferred.

 • High School diploma or GED.

Formal EKG or arrhythmia class with a minimum of 20 hours.

Successful completion of arrhythmia updated within the last two years if basic arrhythmia class taken over two years ago.

 • Successful completion of the Kaiser Permanente basic arrhythmia assessment test with a score of 80% or better. 

Current BCLS card.  

 • Adequate hearing either alone or with a hearing device.

Ability to organize and ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

 • Ability to work as a team member.
