Description:
Selected patients in the defined service must be evaluated by the nurse practitioner (NP). The NP conducts physical examinations, consults with patients in person and over the phone or electronically, works with others in the department to ensure that patient care is delivered smoothly and in accordance with established quality indicators and takes part in the coordination of patient care as a whole. The NP answers to both the Department Manager and the Chief of the assigned service.
Significant Duties:
Practices within the established standard process for the NP role in compliance with Kaiser Permanente policy and the standards specified by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
Conducts patient assessments in accordance with departmental practice, including history-taking and physical examinations that are age-appropriate.
focuses on patient/family education, family involvement, and patient advocacy while continuously collecting data and doing assessments with an eye toward patient advocacy.
consults with the supervising doctor or other doctors as necessary given the patient's needs and the results of the evaluation.
collaborates with doctors and other clinicians in the department to ensure that patients receiving treatment from the designated service receive effective care that is consistent with quality indicators.
examines the medical record to request follow-up appointments or diagnostic tests in accordance with established guidelines.
Establishes and maintains connections with various healthcare departments and providers to guarantee operational effectiveness, to advance consistency and continuity of service, and assure operational efficiency.
builds strong working connections with patients, families, and other members of the healthcare team. respects the legal, moral, and cultural rights of employees.
The members of the healthcare team's tasks and activities are delegated and coordinated effectively. evaluates the efficiency of the care provided by the team.
demonstrates an understanding of and adherence to the institution's designated safety guidelines. demonstrates effective performance in emergency situations by adhering to set processes, maintaining composition, alerting the proper parties, and recording happenings.
Shows accountability and responsibility for one's own professional practice. often takes part in staff development initiatives for department and unit staff.
demonstrates legal expertise in all facets of patient care and unit operation, including patient confidentiality and risk management.
takes part in department and unit performance improvement efforts. as requested, takes part in nursing research initiatives. effectively identifies and resolves issues.
displays a service-oriented attitude when interacting with patients, their families, and all other healthcare professionals. demonstrates competence in using computers and communication channels to store, manage, and transmit information.

Minimum of 6 months experience as a nurse practitioner. One (1) year of experience within the past three (3) years as a NP in an inpatient or outpatient psychiatric care facility, including the provision of treatment and crisis intervention for members with acute or chronic psychiatric disorders.
- Master's Degree in Nursing (unless already a Kaiser Permanente employee who was grandfathered in prior to California Business and Professions Code requirement on January 1, 2008)
- Completion of a masters program in Adult NP, Family Practice NP, Acute Care NP, Pediatric NP or Psych/Mental Health NP required: Adult, Family, Acute or Psych/Mental Health NP if the practice is limited to adults; Family, Pedi or Psych/Mental Health NP if practice limited to pediatric patients. If only caring for a specific patient population of adults or pediatrics then Acute Adult NP or Acute Pediatric NP is required.
