Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Chief of Anesthesiology, or designate, assists the anesthesia provider. practices within established standards of care, rules, and procedures and within the legal parameters of one's field of expertise.
Significant Duties:
The anesthetic plan of care is carried out in coordination with the anesthesia provider(s).
Performs patient care tasks within the parameters of practice while taking aging requirements into consideration. Helps with direct patient care for newborn, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients as a member of the anesthetic care team.
The setup, application, and assistance of Non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring, induction of anesthesia for general/regional & local anesthesia, fiberoptic intubation, provision of cricoid pressure, insertion of routine & difficult venipuncture, positioning of the patient for surgery, anesthesia blocks, and emergency C-sections in labor & delivery are just a few of the daily tasks that must be completed under minimal supervision.
in concert with the anesthetic care team, reacts to Code Blue, Code Pink, etc.
as necessary, prepares and uses gentle warming techniques.
Takes a proactive role in developing rules and procedures, identifying and fixing problems, staff development, and quality enhancement.
oversees tasks to make sure patient care tasks are completed.
sets up the anesthetic airway. as necessary, prepares the machine for latex allergy and malignant hyperthermia.
Setting up and assisting with the placement of invasive monitoring devices, such as an arterial line, a central venous pressure line, a PA catheter, a cardiac output monitor, and other monitoring adjuncts using sterile procedures in both normal and emergency scenarios
aids in collecting lab samples and ABGs.
Has proficiency using and ensuring the quality of point-of-care testing equipment.
coordinating the availability of patient monitoring equipment with the PACU and the critical care units.
assists the perioperative team in facilitating a quick room change.
assembles the tools and materials required for general, local, and regional anesthesia.
Assists the anesthetic practitioner with the preparation of the patient, the installation of electrodes, the use of ultrasonography and nerve stimulator devices, and the mechanical work of pumping the syringe plunger to inject medication during regional blocks.
Assists with procedures prepare anesthetic trays, and ensures sanitary technique.
removes and properly discards supplies and machinery after the anesthetic practitioner has completed a procedure.
operates TEE, intra-aortic balloon pumping, and cell salvaging equipment as necessary.
cleans, sterilizes, and decontaminates all anesthesia-related non-disposable items.
Examines the anesthetic workroom, machines, carts, and auxiliary anesthetizing locations for out-of-date supplies, non-scheduled medications, and out-of-date supplies while maintaining sufficient supply.
possesses knowledge of the common anesthetic drugs, including their use, recommended storage, generic and brand names, and labeling specifications.
liaises with the pharmacy to arrange for out-of-stock medications.
uses working knowledge of how all devices and monitors operate.
routinely checks and maintains anesthetic equipment, looks for damage, and, when necessary, sends it in for repair or troubleshooting.
maintains and repairs anesthetic equipment in coordination with biomedical engineering, and always has enough equipment backup.
organizes the trial, data gathering, and advice on future equipment purchases.
Maintains records and documentation of equipment maintenance and repairs while collaborating with engineering.
Maintains an inventory of all supplies and equipment, both disposable and not, and starts replacements through reputable contract vendors.
Maintains and replaces supplies in emergency carts and boxes, including those for fiberoptic/difficult airway, malignant hyperthermia, fluid resuscitation/code purple, and code blue.
ensures a tidy, efficient, and clean working environment.
takes part in pertinent local, regional, and governmental committees.

Basic Qualifications:

Education

Graduate of an Accredited program in Anesthesia Technology with an AS degree OR certified by the American Society of Technologists and Technicians (ASATT), as a Technologist

High School Diploma.
License, Certification, Registration
-
Certified Anesthesia Technologist designated by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists & Technicians (ASATT).
-
Valid ACLS & BCLS Provider Card.
-
IV Certification or a graduate of an Accredited Anesthesia Technology Program.
Additional Requirements:
-
Demonstrated ability to perform the duties and responsibilities required of a Certified Anesthesia Technologist.

Must be able to lift 45 lbs. of equipment from an overhead position on a daily basis.

Must be able to push/pull up to 500 lbs.
-
Keyboarding skills Upon training must be able to use appropriate computer software applications, including the Health Connect system.

Must be able to stand or walk continuously.
-
Able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in the use of anesthesia equipment, including proper quality assurance, storage, and troubleshooting.
-
Working knowledge of Anesthesia department procedures, principles of asepsis and sterile technique.
-
Able to demonstrate manual dexterity and mechanical ability.

Must be able to exercise judgment and work efficiently and competently with minimal supervision.

Utilizes effective communication strategies, which result in intended outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Certificate of training for Drager, GE, or other anesthesia delivery systems, if not a graduate of a program.

Minimum one (1) year of experience in a Cardiac OR and/or Level 1 trauma center.
