About Indiana in brief
America's Midwestern region includes the state of Indiana. In terms of area, it ranks 38th among the 50 States, while it has the 17th-highest population. Indianapolis is both the country's capital and largest city. On December 11, 1816, Indiana became the country's 19th state. In the northwest, it shares a boundary with Lake Michigan; in the northeast and north, with Michigan; in the east, with Ohio; in the south and southeast, with Kentucky and the Wabash River; and in the west, with Ohio and Kentucky.
For thousands of years, numerous indigenous peoples lived in what would become Indiana; some of them were driven out by the American government between 1800 and 1836. Even after gaining statehood, native tribes still controlled a considerable portion of Indiana, hence the name. Since then, Indiana's population patterns have mirrored the regional cultural segmentation found in the Eastern United States. The state's northernmost tier was primarily settled by immigrants from New England and New York, central Indiana by migrants from the Mid-Atlantic states and neighboring Ohio, and southern Indiana by colonists from the Upland South, particularly Kentucky and Tennessee.
With a gross state output of $352.62 billion in 2021, Indiana has a varied economy. Along with a multitude of smaller cities and villages, it has many metropolitan areas with populations of more than 100,000. The Indianapolis Colts of the NFL and the Indiana Pacers of the NBA are two professional sports franchises based in Indiana. A number of important sporting events, including the Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, are also staged in the state.
